I don't get the book burner. So a used bookseller is burning old copies of Tom Clancy books because local libraries and thrift stores couldn't use them. And the protest is what, exactly? That there are too many bestsellers printed each year?

Oh, I know. I read that article earlier, and I thought, "Er?" Meanwhile, people are frantically sifting through the To-Be-Burned stacks and buying them from him? I mean, was that his point? A fire sale!?

I think it's pretty safe to say that he's all about the publicity.
not just publicity. he has rental fees for the warehousing of those books, I am sure. If he can't give them away to libraries, he has to pay to have them hauled away to a landfill. what else is he going to do with them?
If they are new books, he may have to pay some kind of property tax on them. Nonetheless, I wondered just what he expected to gain by doing this.

Well, if it was because he wanted to save on rental fees and taxes he should just say so instead of whining about people's disinterest in old Tom Clancy novels.
