What I tried to do was remember, lo, those many years ago -- what did I like? What did sing along to? Do I care at all that Sophie B loses all respect for my music taste?

A number of these I had totally forgotten; thanks, YouTube, for the memories!

So of course, I tag the Pop Goes the Library crew: Sophie, Susan, Carlie, Melissa, John and Karen.

So I looked at my year, and I don't remember most of them. Boy bands, Usher and 'Puff Daddy' were WAY over represented.

This is probably why I don't remember many of them.

I know I sound like my parents, but music was lots more fun back then (I'm a 1983 graduate). Many of your songs brought a smile to my face. 1984 was my first year at UNC and I spent much time in our dorm lounge watching MTV back when they actually showed music videos.

Thanks for the 99 Luftballoons video. My kids love this song (I have the 45). Remember the time we tried to fill Chris's Camero with balloons?

How does one love "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and hate "She Bop?"

1984? Wow, you're young.... 8)

I'm posting the list for '72 on my blog. Didn't even recognise more than half the songs.

Wow, Liz, what a total treat for the brain and memory. Those songs were my songs--although you were awfully harsh on some of them I mean, come on--what's wrong with Hall and Oates? You must have been a *rebel.*

Jackie, that's totally what I said when I looked at my year! Actually, forget not remembering the songs, I haven't even heard of a good third of those people/bands. I think I know more songs from 1984 than 1998. And a lot of those songs are better, too. *sob* I mean, "When Doves Cry"? Total classic! The #1 song for my year is "Too Close" by Next. I don't remember that at all. And who is Next?

Dang, I can't edit my last comment.

I meant, *whines*

Too... many... horrifying... fashion memories. Make it stop. Oh please, god... make it stop.

I too am a 1984 grad but my favs don't show up on most lists. Metallica's Ride the Lightning album came out that year and changed hard rock music forever.

During 1984, I walked into a music story in Chicago and heard an EP by a band called Queensryche -- they soon became one of my favorite bands of all time. They are kind of heavy metal version of The Who.

I was very much into Dokken back then and they released an album called Tooth and Nail that year.

Bon Jovi also came on the music scene that year with his first album and a song called Runaway.

And, back then I was still listening to Triumph on a regular basis. They released an album entitled Thunder Seven that year.

I now spend my time listening to Irish folk music and bands like Iron & Wine but in those days I was essentially a heavy metal guy.

Revisiting those old high school songs, who knew it would be such fun? I'm surprised at how many of the videos I do remember... but then, MTV played vidoes back then. M did stand for music.

While I can't pretend to "know" music, I can say that as I got older my tastes moved away from top 40.

Music phases since then? Hm, there was grunge (god, I loved Nirvana), Indigo Girls, the Pogues (still one of my favorite bands), Irish music (Chieftans and the like).

Sadly, a lot of music I like now is music I first hear on a TV show or movie and I go, hey, what's that song?

I still love the Indigo Girls. As far as grundge goes, I was and am still into Pearl Jam rather than Nirvana.

Check out Planxty and Christy Moore if you like the Chieftans.

Thanks for the recommendation; and years ago I saw Luka Bloom (Christy's brother) in concert in Philadelphia. Acoustic Motorbike is one of my favorite albums.

Oh My God! Not only do I know all those songs, I can sing them all (not well, but I know all the words). I graduated HS in 1984 also and this really brought back memories. Some of them are such favorites, I have them (Major Tom) on my Ipod right now:)
