My TV Childhood

Inspired by video postings by Fuse and Bookshelves of Doom, I offer you some of my childhood classics that fall under the "no one has ever heard of them and I don't understand that" category.

First, it's nice to say hello.

And there are no locks on Story Box.

And no, I'm not sure if there was an OLD Zoo Revue. And yes, it was all about Freddy.

Sadly, I cannot find a clip from Yogi's Ark, which introduced me to the joy of the crossover, as well as the song The Perfect Place. I cannot even find lyrics for that darn song.

Hey, Liz. You're not alone in your love of The Magic Garden. Some friends included the theme song on a CD they gave as their daughter's birthday party favors a few years ago. I was very familiar with the song until the CD went belly up. My friends, who grew up on Long Island, LOVED The Magic Garden. I'd never heard of it--I think it was a NYC-area thing. The dad made the CD and it was great, also featuring Prince's "Starfish and Coffee."

That New Zoo Revue clip was AMAZING. My jaw dropped. Literally. I just... wow. You totally win.

(They did the sideways thumb dance thing! Does it even have a name? It must.)

I remember New Zoo Revue. The Magic Garden is vaguely familiar. I wonder if it was a NYC thing - and since when I was small I was in the Philly area I didn't get it. We did watch cartoons like Simba the White Lion and others I can't remember the names of.

I am cracking up because I did the same thing when I saw the Sesame Street clip on Fuse... I went and looked up old Nickelodeon shows. Shows my sister and I are convinced we are the only people who ever watched them. Pinwheel and Today's Special. I also enjoyed the Zoo Revue.

Hah! Today's Special... It's funny -- I thought everybody watched that, never realizing that TV is regional. I think the New Zoo Review beats everything for the scary factor. That was old when I was really little. I think that was old when it came on!

I have a very vague memory of a song from a show... about a kid named Simon... something about the pictures he drew coming true... It was something I only saw on vacation at my grandma's, and it had to have been before I was six... anyway, is that the song?

Wait. No, that wasn't the song. It's from a show called Simon in the Land of Chalk Drawings. And it was OLD -- an old UK cartoon, which kills me. I have no idea how I watched it, except they still must have been showing Captain Kangaroo reruns at my grandma's house.

Now, there's a flashback!

Oh, I used to love The Magic Garden! They used to sing "Does Eat Oates," which I thought was the funniest thing in the world.

And, tadmack, I totally know that show. "Well, you know my name is Simon, and the things I draw come true!" I sing that song whenever there's a Simon in my storytimes, and no one ever knows the show. It's always so sad when no one gets my references.

I used to love The New Zoo Revue. Thanks for digging that up! I think I even remember Yogi's Ark, but I just can't place it. I love trips down memory lane...
