What To Read Now?

A silly question, perhaps, but for an entire year it's been young adult reading all the time. Which I loved, of course! But now I can look at reading other things without feeling guilty; and without it taking away from committee obligations.

I asked this over at Facebook, where I got some great suggestions like Shopaholic (which my cousin has also recommended.)

So, what should I read?

Best adult book I've read recently was The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows. It was very sweet - made me want to write long chatty letters and do nice things for people.

If you haven't read them yet, I highly recommend Silent in the Grave by Deanna Raybourn and Diana Peterfreund's Ivy League Novels.

I think you should read either Battle Royale by Koushun Takami or Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishigoru.

Depends on the genre! I've got a ton of good suggestions (and ones to stay away from) over at http://tinyurl.com/bqv2jb

Seconding the rec for The Guernsey literary and potato peel pie society - a warm and interesting historical fiction.

Angiegirl, so many people have said the Raybourn books are good that I'm really looking forward to it arriving in the post soon!

I've got the perfect book.
The opposite of a YA.

Cranford, by Elizabeth Gaskell.

No action, no sex, no violence (unless the doctor was lying), no plot, no nothing!

Could a person under 21 possibly get through it?

And yet it's a fascinating book for an adult to read. I just finished it and hated to leave the little village of Cranford.

(p.s. Seeing the Masterpiece Theatre version doesn't count.)

I second (and third) the recommendation of the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. Loved it. Also, The Story of Edgar Sawtelle. I took a break from reading MG/YA fiction in January, but now I'm back to reading YA. :) Happy reading!

Re: Cranford... I'm several chapters in, and still going, and just turned 22 in December. So we'll see... :)

'Revolutionary Road'--it is a nice transition from YA to real adults who are young (29/30) with complex and difficult emotions. Well written, topical (the movie that was snubbed!), and an obvious influence since it was written in 1961.

How about a nice middle grade book, like, um, the Graveyard Book?

If you're into mystery (with a dash of romance), I recommend Claudia Mair Burney's Amanda Bell Brown mysteries (Murder, Mayhem, and a Fine Man = book 1; Death, Deceit, and Some Smooth Jazz = book 2). I love this series (& author).

My two recent favorites are "Black Swan Green" and "The Good Thief." They have 13 and 12 year old protagonists, respectively, but are great reads for adults.

I really just clicked on the comments to see what other people have suggested! The last really good books I've read were written by Sarah Waters or Paul Auster. I think it depends on what the reason for reading is and what genre/s you're interested in. Hope you found something really good.
