What Comes After Zombie?

We've had vampires, and now zombies.

So what supernatural creature will be the next "it" book?

Werewolves. Trust me.

Vampires had their allure because of an odd sexual attraction. Zombies aren't sexy but they're funny so we've moved from sexy to funny.

Werewolves offer the chance to explore duality, a topic that never dies in YA. And there's a chance for sex, as wit the vampires.

Get out your silver bullets.

I agree with Brian--based on the ARCs I got at Midwinter, I definitely think werewolves are the next supernatural "it" creature. Part of it might come from Jacob's popularity in the Twilight saga, but I think that it's just simply about a creature that lends itself to metaphors that work in YA lit.

I was going to say Werewolves too - but maybe it will be surprise and we'll get mummies.

This is a great question--I've been wondering about this myself. I do think werewolves are likely. I guess good/bad faeries have already kind of made the rounds...

Another possibility could be angels/demons or some variation thereof, like minor deities. Of course, Neil Gaiman already tackled that one about as well as it can be done, in my opinion.

I agree that werewolves seem to be coming to the fore, but I also know about five people (pro writers all) who are writing mermaid books at the moment...

Faeries. I am aware of several of these novels coming out soon...

Maybe if enough people decide it's going to be mummies we will be rewarded? Please?!

MUMMIES! MUMMIES! MUMMIES! MUMMIES!

I vote a resurgence of fairies...Wondrous Strange, Need, and Lament all just came out and deal with fairies. I am actually planning a "Fairies are the next Vampires" display. Though I'm happy to hear about the werewolf ARCs. Blood and Chocolate is one of my fav books of all time. If writers can do werewolves like Klause then I'm all for more werewolf stories.

Seems to be faeeeeries (with too many eeees) have been on the rise for awhile, and werewolves are an obvious inheritors of the vampire thing. But I vote for cowboys and cowgirls. Zombie faeeeerie cowboys.

(I detest these spellings if fairy. I think they're designed to sound "smarter or more complex somehow)

I've been saying for a while now that the next big supernatural creature in YA is totally going to be leprechauns.

Scary: Werewolves.
Pretty: Mermaids.

What about merwolves?

There's no need to ask ... the fairies are already here. Everywhere! :)

I also have to go with werewolves. Faeries have been really popular with the elementary school set for the last three or four years; I wonder if they'd want to keep reading about them as they make the transition to middle/high school.

BTW, did you guys see this:

?

I'm a long-term fan of zombies *and* Jane Austen, but this just made me feel... I dunno, dirty? Like someone was trying to get my money without trying too hard? I don't love it, at any rate.

Man, I thought I was so smart thinking of werewolves, and then I got here and read all the other comments.

How about mummies? That could be fun.

Okay, I was being mostly facetious, but seriously . . . who feels more out of place in their own skin, a 3000 year old dried-up mummy or a fifteen year old? Hunh.

I feel like there have always been faeries, vamps, and werewolves around. I go with a previous commenter and say angels in various forms. The whole fallen angel angle!

Mummies!!

Though, truth be told, I'd be totally down for some leprechaun action and not just because the commenter has a super awesome name.

Oh, I am with Stacy Dillon, now that she mentions it-- definitely angels and angel-related lore-- I'm seeing them cropping up more and more and it hasn't been done to death in YA (or anywhere?) already. I was myself thinking that might be an interesting direction to go in with writing just a few days ago....

Yeah, building on Death Note, Zombie Loan and other mangas, as well as some ARCs I picked up at Midwinter, I see a big upswing in all kinds of angels and deities.

I also predict (or is it just hope?) we'll be treated to more supernatural creature HUNTERS and less supernatural creature LOVERS. :)

Even though I'm on team zombie, I really hope it's mummies. I'd love to keep reading about Theodosia, and I'm a huge Elizabeth Peters fan. I wish more mummies would come out of the closet (or sarcophagus).

No idea, but Little Willow's "merwolves" cracked me up!

I love mermaids, werewolves, and mummies. But I want something a little different....zombie unicorns anyone??
